You may have heard that celery sticks take so much energy to chew and provide so little carbohydrate that they are essentially negative-calorie. But did you know that your body can spend so many calories digesting homemade vegetable soup that it also effectively has negative calories?
There are no foods that somehow suck calories out of your fat cells. But there are foods that require more energy to chew and digest than they release to the body. Vegetable soup can be one of those foods if you prepare it the right way.
The best way to do a cabbage soup diet is to plan ahead and make a big pot of cabbage soup stock—minus the vegetables—the day before you start your diet. This soup stock will become more and more flavorful as the week goes on. Every time you eat a cup (the minimum) or a bowl (not a maximum, but enough) of vegetable soup, you first bring the soup stock to boiling and the pop in some chopped cabbage, spinach, or kale, turning off the heat and allowing the soup to sit until the greens are wilted and tender. Of course, you can also pop in a little finely sliced celery, carrots, onion, garlic, mushroom, tomato, cilantro, or just a few sweet corn kernels for more taste and flavor.
This soup will fill you up. It’s very low in calories. But if you want to make your vegetable soup negative-calorie, follow this simple rule:
Start with vegetable stock that you heat up. Then add vegetables, but only vegetables, and consume the soup before the cabbage gets tender.
You will also want to avoid adding any oil to your soup stock, of course, and vegetable stock will be better than chicken stock or beef stock. The vegetables need to retain a little crunch (and all their fiber) for it to have effectively less than zero calories.
Your body will use more calories digesting the soup than it will get out of the soup—just not very many more calories. You will burn a net of about 20 calories per bowl of cabbage soup. Over a year, however, that’s another two pounds of fat loss or maybe seven pounds of total weight loss (since you eventually lose water weight as you lose fat).Jun 02nd by admin
